If you are a massive skincare and beauty blog reader like me you may have noticed the Ren Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask popping up everywhere. It’s had honourable mentions in various Monthly Favourites and Skincare routines on YouTube channels. Just doing a Google search brings up some impressive reviews about this product. I have to be honest; I got sucked into the hype and bought the mask. I did buy it in December last year before I started uni again so technically not breaking my budget ;D.
The Ren Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask contains 6.5% glycolic acid. My first question when I was considering buying this mask was “What is Glycolic acid?” Well, after much searching I have found out that it is a fruit acid complex which is a natural exfoliant found in grapes and sugar cane that is commonly used in skincare treatments (acne treatments, chemical peels). The Glycolic acid apparently eats away (probably not the best way to put it) the outer layer of dead skin cells which then promotes renewal of new skin. Good bye dead dull skin!
Products which contain glycolic acid have been suggested to improve skin appearance by diminishing the appearance of fine lines, age spots, scarring, skin congestion and blemishes. It also evens out the skin and produces a much coveted “glowy-ness”. Ren does mention on their website that this product is not suitable for sensitive skin and that the product may produce some tingling sensation.
I have used the Ren Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask once a week for 3 months now. I use it mid-week and I use a cloth mask on the weekend. The instructions say to apply a generous amount over the face and neck and leave it on for 10 minutes. After the time is up, dampen the cloth provided and gently wipe away the mask. I just rinse it off with warm water.
In terms of texture and scent, it has a sticky honey-like consistency and it also smells like orange-flavoured honey. The scent is not unpleasant but it’s definitely not my favourite.
What I love about it…
~ The masks uses bio extracts from fruit acids with no added nasties like parabens
~ Dermatologist tested and approved
~ Noticeably softer skin after the first use of the mask
~ After a few weeks of use, my skin was much smoother and appeared brighter
~ Others have also commented on the fresh-faced, healthy glow!
~ I did not experience any tingling or discomfort
What I don’t love so much…
~ Although my skin did feel softer after the first application, I didn’t notice instant amazing results like the rave reviews about the mask led me to believe
~ I feel that the results can be achieved by more affordable masks
~ AUD$66 at Mecca Cosmetica for 50ml is a steep price to pay
I experienced a bit of an anti-climax with the Ren Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask. I think I was spoiled by so many rave reviews and 5-star ratings. My results were good but not amazing and the results were gradual, not instant. However, after reading so many reviews, I have noticed that results are reportedly better with dry-skin or when used in quite cold-climates. I’ve been using it over Summer and Autumn, and my skin has been combination-oily so this may have affected the results. I also need to put the cost factor on the table. Unfortunately, due to the cost, I will be searching for a more affordable option after I squeeze the last drop out of this bottle.
